Titans defeat Huron 41-14

The Tea Area High School football team secured a commanding 41-14 victory over Huron on Friday, Sept. 13, extending their all-time record against Huron to 4-0. The win also ended a two-game road losing streak for the Titans.

The game opened with a 15-yard touchdown run by Cole McKinney, followed by a successful two-point conversion with a pass from Brenner Konrad to Carter Brown, putting the Titans up 8-0. Huron responded with a kickoff return for a touchdown as the first quarter ended, narrowing the score to 8-7.

In the second quarter, Konrad scored on a 56-yard quarterback keeper, though the extra point attempt was missed, bringing the score to 14-7. McKinney added to the lead with a 22-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a successful PAT from Grifin Wiebenga, making it 21-7. Before halftime, McKinney connected with Riley Svanda on a 32-yard pass for another touchdown, with Wiebenga’s extra point giving Tea Area a 28-7 advantage at the half.

In the third quarter, Sam Werdel ran in a four-yard touchdown, though the PAT was missed, the Titans’ lead was extended to 34-7. 

Huron managed to score in the third quarter, closing the gap to 34-14, but in the fourth, Daschle Lowery passed to Werdel for a 13-yard touchdown, and Wiebenga’s PAT sealed the Titans’ 41-14 win.

Tea Area dominated the game with 408 total yards, including 274 rushing and 134 passing. Huron managed just 113 total yards, with 20 rushing and 93 passing.

In the passing game, Brenner Konrad completed eight of 13 attempts for 89 yards, while Cole McKinney contributed with one pass for 32 yards, and Daschle Lowery completed one of two passes for 13 yards. Riley Svanda led the receiving corps with three catches for 57 yards, followed by McKinney with three receptions for 32 yards. Sam Werdel caught two passes for 33 yards, and Carter Brown had two receptions for 12 yards.

On the ground, Konrad led the Titans’ rushing attack with 133 yards on 11 carries. McKinney added 92 yards on 11 carries, while Werdel rushed for 66 yards on eight carries. Brown chipped in with 19 yards on five carries.

Defensively, Werdel stood out with nine tackles, while Brown added four tackles and a sack. Svanda, Hayden Bialas, Dawson Eimers, Parker Wilson, and Caleb Kuhnert each recorded three tackles. Svanda and Kuhnert both had interceptions, and Lane Kelsey recovered a fumble.

The Titans will host winless Douglas on this Friday, Sept. 20, with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
